Photo Update: Week 9

Most of the puppies have now gone to their new homes! We only have Bentley and Rosie left, and they are going to their new homes this weekend. I thought it would be fun if Kia, Maggie, and Dodge-excuse me: he’s Cooper now–could still get in on the Week 9 photo update, so I had their new owners each send a picture, as well as descriptions of their puppies in their own words. Check it out below!

First, a couple milestones: Nikki has almost completely weaned her two last puppies now, allowing maybe only one feeding per day. They still try to sneak a suckle here and there, but she’s usually quick to growl and fend them off. As a result the three of them romp and play a lot more, as Nikki knows that the only way to keep them distracted is by playing with them. 🙂

Oh, and the Bentley and Rosie have learned to climb the steps on our deck now! So, I got pictures of the two of them up there today.

Females

Mercedes, now named Maggie, is adjusting well. Her tail has been wagging almost non-stop, and she is enjoying exploring her new surroundings. She’s been making it through the night without any accidents (10 PM to 5:30 AM), and making it with hardly any accidents through the day. She is settling in well. The only challenge is to keep her from being mothered too much, as I’m sure you can tell from the picture below!! 🙂 Maggie is adopted by Bill and his family from St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mercedes - Week 9

Lexus, now named Rosie, is the little pipsqueak of the litter! She is curly-coated, with a deep red coloring that none of the other puppies have. She has bold white markings, including the cutest little white toe tips. Lexus Rosie is very sweet and loves to crawl up in your lap and cuddle, but also is very spunky, playful, and outgoing. She loves to meet new people and make new friends! She’s just a tiny little wisp of a puppy, but she’s able to hold her own and assert herself with her big brothers and sisters. Rosie is reserved for James and his family from Washington, D.C.

Lexus - Week 9

Kia is happily settled into her new home in Ames, Iowa. She has officially been declared “The Cutest Puppy Ever” by everyone who meets her, and “perfect” by her new vet Dr. Fett. We kept the name Kia because Kia Ora in New Zealand’s Maori language is an informal greeting meaning “Hi!, G’day.” Our daughter thought it was a perfect fit since half of the family is Kiwi. She loves to snuggle, play with her rubber chicken, tug rope, and little stuffed pig. Walking with a leash is going to take a while, she prefers to just run around in the grass. A big thanks to Sarah and Country Cavachons for giving her such an awesome start to life. Kia is adopted by Lavonne from Aimes, Iowa.

Kia - Week 9

Males

Dodge, now named Cooper, is very snuggly and sweet-tempered, and he is also very busy and curious about everything. He pounces on his toys with a little growl, loves tug of war and running in the yard. He is learning how to chase a ball and “sometimes” he brings it back. He is great in the crate at night and sleeps from about 9:30pm -6:00 am, and last night he didn’t whimper at all. My cats are not sure of him yet, because he wants to bark and play with them. 😉 Cooper is adopted by Susan from Maple Lake, Minnesota.

Dodge - Week 9

Bentley is a chunky boy; medium-sized. He is smooth-coated and has dark red coloring with a small white stripe down his face and throat. Bentley has a very calm, sweet personality. He just melts in your arms when you hold him, and melts your heart while he’s at it. He is becoming more playful and spunky, running around and joining in the fun instead of only sitting back and observing, but his docile personality is still there under the surface. He is going to be a very patient, loving addition to his new family. Bentley is reserved for Katie and her family from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Photo Update: Week 7

Hello everyone! JUST. ONE. MORE. WEEK. That’s right! You are so close to bringing your new little fur-babies home with you! There have been a few updates to personalities this week, so take the time to read through the descriptions below. There have also been name updates! Mercedes is now Maggie and Lexus is now Rosie! I love the names! Dodge’s new owners are considering Cooper for him, but I haven’t heard anything definite yet. And, as far as I know, Kia and Bentley are going to stay Kia and Bentley!

This week the puppies had another first: Their first baths and trims! Well, Lexus Rosie, Dodge, and Kia got trims around their eyes, but Mercedes Maggie and Bentley didn’t need it. Everyone got a bath, though, and, while they were a little nervous about the whole process, they did surprisingly well, even for the blow-drying! No crying or struggling… just some nervous shivering.

The puppies are now to the completely crated phase of their potty training! That means that they are in a medium-sized crate at night. It is large enough for them to move around, but small enough to be cozy and discourage them from going potty. Dogs have an innate dislike of messing their sleeping area, which is something you have to use to your advantage when potty training.

Above: What I call the “puppy pile.”

The newspaper is no longer a part of the picture, and the pups are learning to only go outside on the dirt or grass. They spend the entire night from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am in the crate (if we need to, we’ll take them out at 2:00 am for a quick potty break) and they are nearly to the point where they can make it that whole time without wetting their bed. We have them on an 4-hour-interval schedule now, which is what we are probably going to keep them on until they go to new homes. Here’s what their day looks like:

  • 6:00 am – Good morning, outside to go potty and nurse mama. Back in their crate.
  • 10:00 am – Outside to go potty and eat a puppy chow and/or milk breakfast. Into the outdoor pen (weather permitting).
  • 2:00 pm – Let out of the pen to go potty, nurse mama, and run around for 1/2 to 1 hour. back in the pen.
  • 6:00 pm – Let out of the pen to go potty and eat a supper of puppy chow and/or milk. Again let them run around and get their wiggles out for an hour or so. So long as it’s warm enough out and the weather permits, we try to let them stay outside as long as possible.
  • 7:30 – 8:00 pm – Bring inside and crate.
  • 10:00 pm – Outside for one more potty break and opportunity to nurse mama.
  • 2:00 am – Outside to go potty if needed.

Enough of the update! I know you’re all dying to see this week’s pictures! It’s been raining for the last three days here, so the puppies have been spending a lot of time indoors in their crate, or exploring the kitchen if we’re with them. At 10 this morning, the rain had stopped, so I took the pups out to go potty and was able to snap everybody’s picture except Lexus before it started to rain again. So, Lexus sorry, Rosie is the oddball picture this week, posing on a chair in the living room instead of out on the lawn. 🙂

Females

Mercedes, now named Maggie, is a medium-sized, chunky girl; smooth-coated. She is a brownish-red color with a few bold white markings. She is very outgoing and adventurous–never afraid to explore new places and situations! She likes cuddles and snuggles, but is also our little wiggler–doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long! She is energetic and independent, but has this a way of gazing up at you so adoringly that it completely melts your heart. Maggie is reserved for Bill and his family from St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mercedes - Week 7

Lexus - Week 7

Kia is a big, chunky girl. She is curly-coated and tan in color with a blending of lighter white accents. While the other puppies have pointy noses or rounded faces, Kia is “blocky.” She has a big, wide paws and a big square head. Her legs also seem shorter than the other puppies, giving her the most adorable appearance of a short-legged Corgi. Kia has a vibrant personality–she loves to give kisses and be held and snuggled. She also loves to play, run around outside, and strike the cutest poses for pictures. She’s bright and energetic, but also sweet and cuddly. Kia is reserved for Lavonne from Aimes, Iowa.

Kia - Week 7

Males

Dodge is definitely the biggest of all the puppies! This big, hefty boy is curly-coated and tannish-red in color with lighter tan, almost-white patches on his legs and chest. He has an even temperament, but also a playful, spunky streak. Right now, Shasta (our Border Collie) is his hero. He loves follow her around everywhere and tries to play with her (although her big bark does scare him a little). He loves to pretend that he’s a big, ruff, tuff dog, full of big-dog growls, but at heart he’s a big softy who loves to be snuggled and petted. 😉 Dodge is reserved for Susan from Maple Lake, Minnesota.

Dodge - Week 7 (2)

Bentley is a chunky boy; medium-sized. He is smooth-coated and has dark red coloring with a small white stripe down his face and throat. Bentley has a very calm, sweet personality. He just melts in your arms when you hold him, and melts your heart while he’s at it. He is becoming more playful and spunky, running around and joining in the fun instead of only sitting back and observing, but his docile personality is still there under the surface. He is going to be a very patient, loving addition to his new family. Bentley is reserved for Katie and her family from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Photo Update: Week 6

Good evening, everyone! It’s been a long day! I’m sure all of you (not to mention your friends, relatives, and coworkers, right?) have been eagerly anticipating this update all day. I took new pictures of the pups just this morning, but just didn’t have time to get them posted until now. Thanks for your patience!

There aren’t too many new developments on the puppies this week, except that the weather is finally nice enough that they can spend the majority of the day outside finally. They LOVE it! We have a small 4 foot round pen, half shaded and half sunny, that they can eat, sleep, and play in when we’re not right outside with them, but what they really love is when we can be there to supervise them, and they get come out of their pen and run all around the front yard, playing and exploring.

As far as personalities go, I didn’t make any updates on the descriptions below from last week. There wasn’t really anything new to add. All the puppies are actually going through the roughhousing stage right now, where they are just full of boundless energy and want to play-fight with everyone and everything. We’re working a lot with them on the “no bite” command, and they’re starting to get the hang of the fact that they can’t do whatever they please–that there are some boundaries (they’re a lot like little children)! They aren’t allowed in the flowerbeds. They aren’t allowed to gnaw on us or our clothing. Things like that. Once they start getting the hang of the boundaries, where they can and can’t go and what they can and can’t do, then they really start having fun–they go racing across the sidewalk and skid around the corner of the house on the slippery concrete! We weeded some baby sunflower plants from the flowerbed and they got into the pile of the little plants. They had a blast picking them up in their mouths and strutting around like they had some prize, and then running and chasing each other to try to grab the plants from each others mouths. I’ve got so many adorable videos of them right now! I can’t wait to share them with you all, but I just haven’t gotten around to editing them. Soon (I hope)! Now for this week’s pictures!

Females

Mercedes is a medium-sized, chunky girl; smooth-coated. She is a brownish-red color with some white on her upper chest and throat, and a thin streak of white on her nose and the top of her head. She is very outgoing and adventurous–never afraid to explore new places and situations! She likes cuddles and snuggles as much as the next puppy, but doesn’t demand them, being a lot more independent. Mercedes is reserved for Bill and his family from St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mercedes - Week 6

Lexus is the little pipsqueak of the litter! She is curly-coated, with all dark-red coloring, white toe tips, a white throat stripe down to her chest, and a little bit of white on her nose and forehead. Lexus is very sweet and loves to crawl up in your lap and cuddle, but also is very spunky, playful and outgoing. She loves to meet new people and make new friends! She might be the littlest in the litter, but she thinks she’s the biggest, and loves to try to prove it to her big brothers and sisters. Lexus is reserved for James and his family from Washington, D.C.

Lexus - Week 6

Kia is a big, chunky girl. She is curly-coated and tan in color with a white splotch on her forehead and nose, a white and tan belly, and white toe tips.

Kia - Week 6

Males

Dodge is definitely the biggest of all the puppies! This big, hefty boy is curly-coated and tan in color with a tiny bit of white on his nose, but no other visible white markings, except for lighter tan, almost-white patches on his legs and chest. He has an even temperament, but also a playful, spunky streak. He loves to pretend that he’s a big, ruff, tuff dog, full of big-dog growls, but at heart he’s a big softy who loves to be snuggled and petted. 😉 Dodge is reserved for Susan from Maple Lake, Minnesota.

Dodge - Week 6

Bentley is a chunky boy; medium-sized. He is smooth-coated and has dark red coloring with a small white stripe on his nose and chin and white throat. Bentley has a very calm, sweet personality. He just melts in your arms when you hold him, and melts your heart while he’s at it. He does have some play and spunk in him, but once he’s worked that out of his system, he’s ready to lay back and quietly observe the chaos around him. He doesn’t contribute to it, but it doesn’t phase him either. He’s going to be the perfect addition to a family with young child. Bentley is reserved for Katie and her family from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Photo Update: Week 5

Hello everyone! It’s been a pretty good week for the puppies! We’ve started to get them on a semi-consistent schedule. Ok, so maybe we aren’t so rigid about the time just yet, but we’ve gotten them onto a pretty consistent routine. It consists of us, as soon as we get up in the morning (around 7-8:00), taking them outside to go potty on the lawn or the gravel driveway (preferably before they wake up in the morning), feeding them (right after our own breakfast) a breakfast of 1/2 cup of whole milk + 1/2 cup of warm water + one egg, blended together (which they love!), letting them sleep and play to their hearts content in their box the rest of the morning, taking them out before our lunch (around 1-2:00 to go potty and nurse mama and then letting them sleep or play in their box again in the afternoon, and lastly giving them their lunch/supper of Purina Puppy Chow moistened with about 1/2-1 cup of plain warm water in the evening (around 6-7:00).

The puppies’ personalities are really starting to shine out now! Of course, they’re not going to really be set in their ways until about 6 months old, so there’s still room for growth and development and the effects of nurture over nature when they go to their new homes. However, we’re getting to see some of the early indicators of the basic personality traits. Also, all the families who reserved a puppy have now chosen their specific puppy! I think each puppy got matched to the perfect family and everything has worked out for the best!

Did you say something about wanting one of these adorable puppies? Yes you did! I heard you! How could you resist? Sorry–they’re all taken, but if you Contact Us, we’ll put your on our mailing list for next year’s litter!

Photo Update: Week 4

You’re half-way there! In just another 4 weeks, you’ll be able to bring your puppies home! The latest news on these little tykes is that they have now been introduced to diluted cow’s or soy milk to supplement what Nikki has been giving them. They learned to lap it up very quickly, and now really look forward to their daily treat. They’re also moving around a lot more, playing, growling, pouncing (usually falling over in the process). It is adorable!

Katie and Ryan and their children from Minneapolis, MN, came to pick their puppy yesterday. The best part was, their three children had no clue that they were even getting a puppy until they arrived! What a fun surprise! You can watch a video of it on our Facebook page, here. That means that Dodge is now reserved for Susan from Maple Lake, MN, and Lavonne from Aimes, Iowa, is coming tomorrow to pick which female she wants. I want to thank everyone for their patience–I know you all can’t wait to pick your puppies or find out which one will be yours! Soon…!

Females

Mercedes is a medium-sized, chunky girl; smooth-coated. She is light red with some white on her upper chest and throat, and a thin streak of white on her nose and the top of her head. So far, we’ve noticed that she is laid-back and sweet.

Mercedes - Week 4

Lexus is the smallest of the females so far, but still pretty chunky. She is curly-coated, with all dark-red coloring, white toe tips, a white throat stripe down to her chest, and a little bit of white on her nose and forehead. We’ve noticed that Lexus can be sweet and relaxed, but also very playful and outgoing.

Lexus - Week 4

Kia is turning out to be the biggest girl so far. This big, chunky girl is curly-coated and tan in color with a white splotch on her forehead and nose, a white and tan belly, and white toe tips. Kia has a vibrant personality–she gives little howls when she yawns, she loves to play, and she’s bright and energetic.

Kia - Week 4

Males

Dodge is definitely the biggest of all the puppies (at least so far). This big, hefty boy is curly-coated and tan in color with a tiny bit of white on his nose, but no other visible white markings, except for lighter tan, almost-white patches on his legs and chest. He seems to have an even temperament, but sometimes likes to be a big baby. 😉 Dodge is reserved for Susan from Maple Lake, MN.

Dodge - Week 4

Bentley is a chunky boy; medium-sized. He is smooth-coated and has dark red coloring with a small white stripe on his nose and chin and white throat. Bentley has a very calm, sweet personality. Photo Update: Week 3

We’re already at Week 3! The puppies are walking around a little shakily now, and they’re starting to bark, growl, and sometimes even make little howls when they yawn. Oh, and they’re starting to try to play with each other–it’s SO adorable!

For pictures today, I decided to step outside with each puppy–it’s such a gorgeous day here in Minnesota! 70 degrees today (way better than the snow we had coming down yesterday)!

Females

Mercedes: This big, chunky girl is smooth-coated and is red with some white on her upper chest and throat, and a teeny bit of white on her nose and the top of her head. So far, we’ve noticed that she is laid-back and sweet.

Lexus: The smallest of the females so far, but still pretty chunky. She is curly-coated, with all dark-red coloring, white toe tips, a white throat stripe down to her chest, and a little bit of white on her nose and forehead. We’ve noticed that Lexus is calm, but playful.

Lexus - Week 3

Kia: It will be interesting to see whether Kia or Mercedes end up being the biggest females. This big, chunky girl is curly-coated and tan in color with a white stripe on her forehead and nose, a white and tan belly, and white toe tips. Kia is the pup that likes to give a little howl when she yawns.

Dodge - Week 3

Bentley: This chunky boy is going to be pretty close in size to Dodge, at least it looks that way right now. He is smooth-coated and has dark red coloring with a small white stripe on his nose and chin and white throat. From our observations, Bentley seems to have a very calm, sweet personality.

Bentley - Week 3

Looking forward to meeting those of you who have reserved a pup in the weeks ahead!

Photo Update: Week 2

Hello folks! The puppies are two weeks old today! The big news this week is that their eyes have opened!!! And they are getting SO big! Honestly, I think they are bigger than last year’s puppies were at this age! We’ve noticed that they all have the stocky, chunky build that puppies like Dover had last year. There doesn’t seem to be any with the more lanky build of puppies like Cheyenne. However, that could change as they get older.

I wanted you all to be able to see the puppies markings, so I took upside-down pictures this week. Nikki had just fed the puppies and “changed their diapers,” so they were all feeling fat and sleepy. I think I got as many yawning pictures as regular pictures. 🙂 I decided to include a regular picture and a yawning picture of each puppy this week, because, really, there’s nothing cuter than a yawning puppy!

Females

Mercedes: This big, chunky girl is smooth-coated and is red with some white on her upper chest and throat, and a teeny bit of white on her nose and the top of her head.

Lexus: The smallest of the females so far, but still pretty chunky. She is curly-coated, with all dark-red coloring, white toe tips, a white throat stripe down to her chest, and a little bit of white on her nose and forehead.

Kia: It will be interesting to see whether Kia or Mercedes end up being the biggest females. This big, chunky girl is curly-coated and tan in color with a white stripe on her forehead and nose, a white and tan belly, and white toe tips.

Kia - Week 2  Kia - Week 2 Yawn

Males

Bentley: This chunky boy is going to be pretty close in size to Dodge, at least it looks that way right now. He is smooth-coated and has dark red coloring with a small white stripe on his nose and chin and white throat. So far, he seems to have the most laid back personality of all the puppies.

Bentley - Week 2  Bentley - Week 2 Yawn

As far as personalities, we still aren’t able to tell anything very substantial. All the puppies are docile and sweet, and we’ll be able to tell more as the weeks go by. Each week we’ll update the puppies’ descriptions to reflect anything new we discover about them. The only thing I’ve noticed this week is that Bentley seems to have the most laid back personality so far. Again, that could change in the weeks ahead, so we’ll keep you posted.

The Next Step

Ok everyone! Sorry if you were all worried that I went missing in action! I’m back now! From Tuesday last week through late last night, our family was attending an awesome family retreat in Oklahoma (the puppies stayed at Grandma’s).

I have been getting a lot of emails asking me when and how those of you who have reserved a puppy can place a downpayment and come to pick your puppy. This post should hopefully answer your questions in that regard.

So, next Sunday (April 10th), I will be sending out PayPal invoices to everyone who has reserved a puppy with a request for the $500 downpayment for your puppy. The order in which we receive the downpayments will determine who gets first pick.

Each family will be given one week, in the order that they fall in the queue, during which they have to decide which puppy they want. You can come and visit before you make your choice, or you can let us know via email or phone, and visit at a later date that is more convenient for you. But each family has to pick a puppy within that range of dates, or it will default to the next person in line.

If you have any other questions, feel free to call: 320-582-0201.

Photo Update: Week 1

I know I’m a little early (the puppies’ Week 1 Birthday isn’t until tomorrow), but we are going to be out of town tomorrow, so I thought I’d better take the pictures today instead of making all you eager people wait until next week. 🙂 Oh, by the way: The puppies have been named! Let us know what you think of the names we chose. Our name theme for this year is “Car Makes.”

Females

Mercedes: Smooth-coated, red with light tan rear paw, white tip on right front paw, white chest, and white speck on top of head.

Mercedes - Week 1

Lexus: Curly-coated, all dark red, white toe tips, white chest, front right paw red, white throat stripe down to chest, white stripe on bottom of hind foot. Smallest of the females so far.

Lexus - Week 1

Kia: Curly-coated, tan, white stripe on forehead, all white belly.

Kia - Week 1

Males

Dodge: Curly-coated, all tannish-red, no visible white markings, except lighter patches on legs and chest.

Dodge - Week 1

Bentley: Smooth-coated, all red, white stripe on chin and throat.

Bentley - Week 1

Many of you have been asking when you can schedule to come and visit and pick your puppy…. Hold tight!!! Next week I’ll be posting some detailed information on downpayments and our visiting schedule. Thanks for your patience!
